The Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions (COFTU) has established a labour Institute to empower workers with knowledge and various skills aimed at making them more productive, efficient and competent in their work and dedicated entirely to creating new competencies, attitudes, culture and practices of trade unionists and workers. The Institute is dedicated to its core activities: To mentor and empower workers with capacities and strategic thinking in entrepreneurship, integrity, dignity of labour and hard work and to lead their areas of influence to national transformation. To address issues of work place transformation for a modern economy. To mainstream labour issues in national policy making. To empower workers with capacities to handle change. To highlight the role of labour in moving Uganda, East Africa and Africa out of poverty. To acquire, preserve and disseminate information on labour matters. To serve as a consultant on all matter relating to workers and labour union affairs. To help in formulating policy for the proper management of labour. To plan for, administer and collaborate in workers' education and related programmes. To establish an adult education programme for secondary education, technical, vocational, entrepreneurship and productivity related training for workers including outreaches. Training and sensitizing workers, employers, union leaders and members in industrial relations; leadership development; positive work culture, values and attitudes; and labour laws and policies through workshops, meetings, rallies and media. The institute that will later establish satellite centers for upcountry workers and mobile training units for workplaces especially in the informal economy as outreach programmes, has five (5) Centres:Core Activities
